This guide exists because so much of this vocabulary gets learned the hard way: from an offhand comment that assumes context you don't have, from confusion mid-conversation, or worse, from someone using unfamiliar terminology to build trust before you've had the chance to ask a real question. A field guide format felt right for a simple reason: naturalists observe and identify before they participate, and that is exactly the posture curiosity about this world deserves. Look a term up. Understand it. Then decide, on your own terms, whether it is something you want any part of.
